Sr. Gerri O'Neill, O.P. of the Sisters of St. Dominic
Paraphrased from article by Bob Hogan in the Port Washington News, November 23, 2006
Sister Gerri came to Our Lady in 1981 where she has been the director of religious education (or Faith Formation as it is now called) since for grades kindergarten through ninth. She is also the leader for Eucharistic Ministers and Faith Groups. Sister Gerri grew up in West Long Beach and Rockville Centre.
The closest Catholic school was St. Mary Star of the Sea located in Far Rockaway. It was later when Sister Gerri attended St. Agnes School in Rockville Center that she first met Dominican Nuns.
Fifty eight years ago, Sister Gerri took her vows as an Amityville Dominican Sister known as the Order of Preachers. Being so involved with Faith Formation for our families and children is a perfect complement to the Dominican community's mission of sharing the Gospel with God's people. Sister has been in the field of education in Notre Dame Parish, New Hyde Park; St. John the Evangelist Parish in Riverhead; Good Shepherd Parish in Brooklyn and principal at Our Holy Redeemer parish in Freeport before coming to Our Lady of Fatima.
She completed her undergraduate work in liberal arts at St. Francis College in Brooklyn . Sister Gerri then went on to earn three master's degrees, one each from St. John's University , Iona College and then Fordham University .
